Originally there were plans for another two seasons, the cast had signed contracts for them, but it was unceremoniously canceled after a 4th season.
A follow-up mini-series was produced and aired in 2004.
Following the likes of Babylon 5, it was one of the first television shows to have an overall arc rather than a reset button where characters did not change or grow over time.
The usual tropes were usurped by interesting and different aliens and a woman who could fend for herself, TYVM.
It felt like another galaxy, rather than feeling like a tv set.
There's nothing about Aeryn and John that makes them feel unreal, like someone has forced them together. They just belong.
